php file with mixed php and javascript using <? in VSCode

I have php files which output javascript (using php logic in the build of the javascript
using shorthand <? rather than <?php but its seems to break the formatter in VSCode - getting message which says

Couldn't format the code due to unexpected change on line 156. Please report it at community.devsense.com., Line Offset: 0

May I ask you for the particular file that causes this? It would help a lot to replicate this and fix.

Update: This broke with 1.46.15409. The previous releases were ok.
