Easier way to autocomplete

When I press Ctrl + Space (or type a variable name) the autocompletion window pops up, but to choose an entry, usually the first one, I have to press the up or down arrow once. Would it be possible to pre select the first entry so it's possible to just press enter and have the autocompletion? Or select the first entry by a second Ctrl + Space press? Reaching the arrow keys is quite the inconvenience and I loved the way VAx handled autocompletion.

This already happens with function calls or member variables, by the way. But to choose a variable by tying $va, I'd have to press an arrow key to autocomplete to $variable.

That is a reasonable suggestions and there is a reason for that actually; when typing a variable in PHP, it can be either an existing one or user wants to enter a new one - in the second case the preselection would cause you unwanted completion of an existing variable ... the pre-selection happens if you don't type $.

Anyways; if you would insist :) there is an option for that in Visual Studio:

Hmm, that is indeed an issue because it autocompletes even when pressing space or =
I'll try not-typing the $ for existing variables, it is indeed hard to get it to please everyone. This can be closed then, thank you.

Yes, that's why we don't pre-select when user is typing $ + variable name. If you would have any other idea what would be more comfortable to you? Maybe to confirm the pre-selection only by pressing enter, and not by other characters like =, -. ., ...

@JakubMisek I've tried to not type $ for a while but what I've often ended up with is that it will pre-select things like "sem_acquire" instead of $seminar when I type "sem". Could the functionality for "pre-select variables if $ is typed" be changed in a way that the autocompletion will only happen when pressing enter?
